English translation of Qusṭanṭīn Zuraiq, Maʻnā an-nakba, published in Beirut 1956. Zuraiq originated use of Nakba -- disaster, or catastrophe -- to refer to the 1948 creation of the State of Israel and the dispossession of the Palestinian people.
